Retired President, CEO of Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin Served Organization for 37 Years
MILWAUKEE — John Miller, the retired president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin (Goodwill SEW), is the newest inductee into the Goodwill Industries® Hall of Fame. Miller, who spent 37 years with Goodwill, was inducted in a ceremony recently at Goodwill Industries International’s Conference of Executives.
Miller was acknowledged for his visionary leadership, strong business judgment and sound governance.
“As CEO, John consistently achieved excellence in areas including management, operations, workforce development, governance, and employee and leadership development,” said Jackie Hallberg, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin, when nominating Miller. “We at Goodwill SEW were lucky to work with and learn from John Miller. He has been a teacher, mentor and positive example for generations of staff.”
Miller began working for Goodwill in 1975 as a director. He retired in 2012, after serving as president and CEO of Goodwill SEW for 30 years. During his period of stewardship, Goodwill SEW grew from an organization serving 176 people to one that served more than 53,000 people. In addition, he grew the budget more than 3,600 percent over that same period.
Miller previously received three additional prestigious Goodwill awards: the Kenneth K. King Award for Management Excellence; the P.J. Trevethan Award, named after Dr. Percy J. Trevethan who joined Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries (Boston, MA) in 1926 and had an exemplary 40-year Goodwill career; and the J.D. Robins Jr. Distinguished Career Award for adopting the “least cost” method, advocated by former Goodwill CEO Robins, that increases efficiency in donation and retail centers to create jobs and job training, and fund additional programs for individuals with disabilities or other disadvantages. Miller also served on the Goodwill Industries International board of directors and served as chair of the Executive Council of the Goodwill Conference of Executives.

The Goodwill Industries Hall of Fame recognizes retired Goodwill CEOs, staff, volunteers and others for exemplary contributions to the broader Goodwill mission. Begun in 1991, the Hall of Fame’s initial class of inductees included Goodwill founder Edgar Helms. The Hall of Fame now has 49 members.
