Set Yourself Up For Success With Goodwill®

A huge part of success is preparation. It’s rare that a person makes a major accomplishment without at least some sort of planning and thoughtful execution. While your goals may be lofty, the tools to help you reach them might actually be closer than you realize! They may even be at your local Goodwill®.

Your big job interview is looming on the horizon and you’re still staring blankly into the abyss that is your closet, waiting for the right outfit to jump out at you. It has to be professional, crisp, and still comfortable so you’re not sweating any more than you already will be as you make this scary step toward a different future. Don’t let this task overwhelm you. Check out this “Dress For Success” pinboard by Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina, Inc. (Greensboro) for a little inspiration, then head out thrifting to pull the pieces together. You’ll be able to find just the right look and since you don’t have that dream job yet, you can save some money in the process!

Remember, though, that sometimes dressing for success isn’t so much about wearing a certain style as it is about confidence. When you feel good about yourself, others can tell. Carry yourself with certainty and you’ll most certainly find the success you seek. John from Horizon Goodwill Industries (Hagerstown) illustrates this point perfectly with the story of his treasured camel corduroy jacket. As much as his wife may chide him for still wearing it 20 years after its purchase, John feels good when he wears it. His confidence soars and the work he does is better. Do you have a certain article of clothing that makes you feel this way? Maybe it’s waiting for you in the racks of your local Goodwill!

How about those lucky people who get to work from home? Even if pajamas are acceptable work attire there is something that can be done to facilitate success; curate an inspiring workspace. Bridget from the DIY Playbook blog has created this gorgeous home office with $6 cabinets from Goodwill, a DIY tabletop, and free printables! My favorite part of the custom office (other than the price!) is how she made a functional workspace that also looks beautiful. Going to work every morning is easy when your office space looks like this.

Other than providing shoppers with low prices for clothing, household items, and more, Goodwill also helps people find success by providing onsite and virtual skills, and employment training, job placement services and other community-based services, such as career counseling, financial education and résumé preparation. Success means something different to everyone, but with so many wonderful programs and options, I’m sure you’ll be able to make progress with the help of Goodwill.
