Michael and Tomas were paired through Goodwill Industries® of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina’s GoodGuides® youth mentoring program. Through involvement with his mentor, Tomas ended his affiliation with a gang and now dreams of going to college and being a professional baseball player.
Michael: I’m the CEO of Latchkey, Inc, and I work with the Greenville, SC, GoodGuides mentoring program. I’ve been a mentor for one year. I enjoy my organization being a part of the program because it gives us a chance to work hands on with the young guys.
Tomas: I like the program because it helps me make good choices. I’ve also learned things since I’ve been with the program. It encourages me in a lot of ways. I always talk about real life things and situations, and we visit colleges to get prepared for the future when we get out of high school.
Michael: I love my mentee, Tomas – he’s a very educated young man with a promising career after he completes high school. This is a good program for the kind of kids that we got, and Tomas, especially, is a very good kid.
Tomas: I like my mentor because he’s a cool fellow and he’s a good all-around person. He encourages me a lot, and he listens to me. He’s a fun person to be around.
