Starting a new phase in life is never easy. In 2005, my husband and I relocated to Charlotte, NC from Brooklyn, NY. My previous work did not require I use a computer often. That being the case, I was completely unprepared for the job market. After trying my hand at a couple of jobs – one selling knives, then telemarketing – I thought to myself, “This is just not going to work!”
I needed updated computer skills badly. One day, I came home frustrated and picked up the yellow pages for job training. Since I didn’t have any money, it needed to be free. I found an ad for Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont (Charlotte, NC). That’s where my journey began.
Three weeks later, I was taking the hospitality training program. I knew this was the right fit. I was determined to leave Goodwill with a job. Goodwill prepared me above and beyond. I received valuable customer service training and was prepared for my interview. I graduated with confidence and three job offers, which meant no more selling knives.
I accepted a job at a Hampton Inn three-and-a-half years ago at the front desk. That was huge because after staying with family and friends, I could finally have my own place to live. I was later promoted to sales coordinator. Today, my husband and I are homeowners and have a great future to look forward to. I have gained a lifetime of professional adventure.
