Ohio Valley Goodwill CEO Honored with 2008 Management Award

Goodwill Industries International® Recognizes Joseph Byrum’s Leadership

July 2, 2008

Rockville, MD — With a goal to enhance opportunities for work and to serve as many people as possible, Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries® Rehabilitation Center (Cincinnati) has firmly established its reputation as an outstanding provider of employment services. In the past year alone, more than 1,200 people benefited from the Cincinnati Goodwill’s quality workforce development services. In addition, a recent study by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) found the agency to be of strong and exemplary performance, with zero need for improvement. These accomplishments would not be possible without the leadership of its president and CEO, Joseph Byrum, who has garnered the 2008 Kenneth K. King Management Award from Goodwill Industries International.

Byrum, who has led the Cincinnati Goodwill® for 30 years, grew the Goodwill’s revenue in the last five years from $18 million to nearly $28 million.  Under his leadership, the Cincinnati Goodwill has been awarded large federal grants to expand homeless veteran services, increased auto auction revenues from $88,000 to $2 million a year, and earned 11 consecutive CARF accreditation certificates. The Goodwill® operates two new work training satellite centers, which increases the chances to provide community-based alternative work opportunities, and plans to host a total of 14 employment kiosks in its retail stores by the end of 2008.  In addition, Byrum serves as a prominent and effective member of the Ohio Association of Goodwill Industries and mentor to Goodwill leaders in other communities.

“Joe Byrum has set the bar by lending his expertise and counsel to other Goodwill agencies and their leaders, and serving as a visionary leader within Goodwill,” says Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International (GII). “The Ohio Valley Goodwill succeeds not only because of Byrum’s dedication and innovative ideas, but also because of his ability to build stellar operations through a high-performing team, from top senior staff to front-line employees.”

The Kenneth K. King award is presented to a Goodwill Industries executive in recognition of outstanding management abilities and accomplishments. The award recognizes a CEO whose performance consistently demonstrates strong organizational impact related to mission, excellence and sustainability. It is named for the late Kenneth K. King, who endowed the Kenneth K. King Management Award for Executive Excellence Trust.
