As board
chair, Sterling B. McCall Jr. has had a positive, lasting impact on Goodwill
Industries of Houston (TX) and the community it serves through several years of
tumultuous circumstances. He has also
served on Goodwill's board, and executive, finance, and capital campaign
committees. McCall’s continuous service
to Goodwill earns him Goodwill Industries International’s 2005 Board Leader
Award.
McCall
has provided his time, talent, resources, and financial gifts to Goodwill. During his tenure, he has seen the Houston
Goodwill through difficult times, including Tropical Storm Allison (which
flooded many Goodwill facilities), Enron's collapse, the elimination of $400,000
in annual state funding, and the loss of city contracts generating $832,000,
annually. McCall was integral to the
organization’s new strategic plan for decentralization, dubbed The McCall
Plan. Further, he has provided
underwriting of radio advertising and ad placement in a national magazine to
increase sales and mission awareness.
“Board
members are invaluable to Goodwill as they dedicate their time, talents,
resources, and business expertise to help develop Goodwill’s strategic plans and
to contribute to the overall growth of the organization as a leading workforce
agency,” says George W. Kessinger, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries
International. “They also help the
organization stay in connection with the real-time business needs of
employers.”
McCall
continued to run a demanding, highly successful business, founded a car museum,
and endured personal challenges, all while supporting Goodwill. Further, he recently funded and dedicated a
Goodwill Good Neighbor Donation Center in memory of his father, in addition to a
donation center dedicated in his family’s honor.
The Board Leader’s Award is given in recognition of outstanding
leadership and service to a member Goodwill organization. The award is given to an officer or member of
a local Goodwill board of directors, board committee or advisory group who has
served a member Goodwill organization in a voluntary capacity. McCall will be honored at Goodwill’s annual
meeting on Tuesday, June 28.
