GOODWILL INDUSTRIES INTERNATIONAL’S INTRANET RECOGNIZED BY THE NIELSEN NORMAN GROUP FOR ITS EXEMPLARY COVID-19 RESPONSE PAGES

ROCKVILLE — Goodwill Industries International’s intranet, MyGoodwill, was recently acknowledged by the world-leading user experience research and consulting firm, Nielsen Norman Group (NN/g), for its exemplary COVID-19 response pages. NN/g recognized Goodwill® in two distinct articles on its website, which are based on interviews with different intranet designers to show how they are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nielsen Norman Group establishes that during a pandemic, intranets should cater to the special user needs that the crisis and employees’ state of mind present as they work under challenging conditions. They argue that there are four types of COVID-19–related content on intranets: health and benefits, virtual-work help, work-process changes and guidance due to the virus, and connection and engagement opportunities. Two strategies that are being implemented to achieve this are putting all COVID-19–related content in one location and fitting all the information pertaining to the virus in the information architecture (IA) and the global navigation of the intranet.

In the case of MyGoodwill, the intranet was recognized for its work-process changes and guidance. Goodwill successfully created seven new intranet pages with different resources about finance, mission and partnerships, government response, and marketing and communications, among other disciplines, all of which are organized in a centralized location.

“When COVID-19 emerged, the Goodwill Industries International team quickly instituted a rapid response team to support community-based Goodwill organizations. Our team built an intranet community; developed business continuity, crisis communications and pandemic plans; and provided how-to guides, tools, and links to critical resources and recorded webinars. We focused on a broad range of issues including finance and operations, HR and employees, government response, mission and partnerships, and external communications,” said Steven C. Preston, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “The Nielsen Norman Group’s acknowledgement is an affirmation of the value resulting from the tireless efforts of our team.”

Goodwill Industries International has been recognized previously by NN/g. In 2017, MyGoodwill was selected as one of “The Year’s Top 10 Intranets” for facilitating employees’ experience by offering high-quality business applications in a single location.
