Oregon Goodwill® CEO Awarded for Commitment to Professional Development

ROCKVILLE, MD — For his tremendous commitment to the development of Goodwill staff and team members at other Goodwill organizations, Jim Martin, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Lane and South Coast Counties (Eugene, OR), is the 2019 recipient of the P.J. Trevethan Award. The award is presented annually to a Goodwill Industries® CEO for outstanding contribution to the training of Goodwill personnel. Goodwill Industries International presented him with the award in February 2019 at its Annual Meeting of the Conference of Executives.

Goodwill Industries of Lane and South Coast Counties provides several internal training programs to develop its team members, including new employee orientation, leadership development training and loss prevention and safety training. The organization also uses RightPath services, a personality-based assessment that gives employers deeper insights into how to retain, develop and further leadership opportunities for their employees.

During his tenure, Martin has created multiple training programs and manuals that are shared both internally to his Goodwill organization and externally to other Goodwill organizations across the United States and Canada. Goodwill programs have proven more effective as a result of the use of his comprehensive training and procedural manuals. Manuals include Donated Goods 101 Training, a Goodwill Employee Handbook, Accounting, Crisis Planning, Cashier Training and more.

Martin’s stellar management techniques are featured in Jacob Stoller’s book, The Lean CEO: Leading the Way to World Class Excellence, where he discusses lean management techniques that organizations should utilize to build an efficient organization. These philosophies involve reducing waste, improving quality, reducing costs and enhancing communication.

In addition to internal training and development, under Martin’s leadership, Goodwill Industries of Lane and South Coast Counties supports external skills and development opportunities for its employees. The organization’s education assistance program funds up to 75 percent of an employee’s educational program, which is the highest amount allowed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Goodwill employees have earned associates, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees with Goodwill’s financial assistance, as well as trade school and commercial driver license (CDL) certifications.

Martin has traveled to more than 30 Goodwill organizations to provide CEO consultations on direction and leadership. Goodwill organizations have recognized the wealth of knowledge that Martin’s staff has, as a direct reflection of his own leadership, skills and commitment to their development as leaders. Seventeen Goodwill leaders from across North America nominated Martin for this award.

“It’s remarkable when a leader is proven successful and impactful not only within their own organizations, but also others”, said Steve Preston, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “Jim has lead by example in demonstrating the importance of efficient training and professional development opportunities, both internally and externally, and the value that adds to the organization”.
