Houston Business Leader to Chair Goodwill Industries International Board of Directors

The Goodwill Industries International Board of Directors has elected Bill J. Kacal of Houston, TX, as its new chair, to serve a one-year term. Kacal took office during the annual Goodwill® Delegate Assembly, which was held in June in Tacoma, WA. Kacal is a certified public accountant and has been with Deloitte & Touche LLP for nearly 40 years where he is currently a senior partner. He is a member of the Deloitte & Touche Board of Directors and is currently the deputy regional managing partner for Mid America Audit. Kacal is currently the chairman of the board for Goodwill Industries® of Houston and previously served as the vice chairman for the Goodwill Industries International Board of Directors.

Charles Schwab Foundation and Goodwill® Team Up to Help People in Need Achieve Financial Well-Being

Charles Schwab Foundation has announced a new relationship with Goodwill Industries International, as part of the Foundation's strategic initiative to create locally tailored programs that aim to improve the financial well-being of the underserved and working poor in locations where Schwab has a significant employee presence. The first of these programs was launched in 2008 in San Francisco with Single Stop USA, followed in 2009 by a second program in Austin, Texas, with Foundation Communities. This new alliance with Goodwill® will support and help build the Good Assets Program, a program that provides comprehensive services and training to strengthen the economic stability of individuals and families. The program will be piloted by Goodwill Industries® of Central Indiana (GICI) and assist people in the communities of central Indiana.

Jeans to Jobs: Goodwill Launches the “Donate Movement” to Encourage Donating With Purpose

Goodwill Industries International, a leading social service enterprise, today launched an education movement to raise awareness about the importance of donating used items and the positive impact those items have on people and the planet. To commemorate the launch, Goodwill® announces the first-ever Donate Challenge with an online Donation Impact Calculator to help consumers quickly and easily determine the social and environmental benefits of their donations. Goodwill Industries International and Prison Fellowship Join Forces to Help Reduce Criminal Recidivism

Goodwill Industries International and Prison Fellowship signed an agreement on June 16, 2010 to collaborate on job training and mentoring services for people who spent time in prison and at-risk youth, and to influence public policy initiatives. The partnership aims to help these populations make a successful return to their communities following their release, support the children of formerly incarcerated individuals and reduce the rate of criminal recidivism.

Bon-Ton’s Goodwill® Sale Event Collects a Record Four Million Pounds of Clothing and Textiles

For the first time in the history of the semi-annual Bon-Ton Goodwill® Sale, which began in 1994, customers donated nearly four million pounds of clothing and textiles. The sale event was held March 10 through March 24, 2010. The donated items have an estimated value of approximately $17 million in revenues, which will support Goodwill’s job training programs, community-based services and other supportive services for individuals in communities nationwide. The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. — which operates stores under the Bon-Ton, Bergner’s, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Elder-Beerman, Herberger’s, Younkers and Parisian nameplates — received donations for Goodwill at its 267 stores. Goodwill will sell the donated items in the communities where they were collected, and the revenues will support job training for people with disabilities, those who lack education or job experience, and others facing challenges to finding employment.

Washington Woman Builds Better Life with Goodwill’s Help

Goodwill Industries International recently named Autum Beel one of its 2010 Kenneth Shaw Graduates of the Year for overcoming an addiction to drugs and for developing a promising career and strong family. Beel became addicted to crystal methamphetamines when she was 13 years old. She ran away from home when she was in high school and sold drugs to support her addiction. By the time she was 19, she had two children, but she asked her mother to raise them. Beel’s drug addiction made it very difficult for her to find and keep a job, care for her children and lead a stable life.

Florida Woman Becomes an Advocate for People Who Are Blind

Goodwill Industries International recently named Sandra Martin one of its 2010 Kenneth Shaw Graduates of the Year for her tireless work to improve the lives of people with visual impairments and disabilities in her community. Martin began losing her vision 30 years ago as a result of juvenile diabetes. She lost her sight completely when her daughter was just a few weeks old. When her daughter was in high school, Martin overheard someone telling the teen that she’d have to take care of her mother for the rest of her life. In that moment, Martin decided she needed to find a job to become more independent.
