Houston Business Man Honored for Long-Time Contributions to Goodwill®

Tommy A. Moore, Jr. has served on the board of directors at Goodwill Industries of Houston for 24 years. His contributions to the organizational growth of Goodwill Houston are immeasurable. For his service, Goodwill Industries International is pleased to award Moore with the 2019 Volunteer Board Leader of the Year award.

Moore’s finance and commercial banking background as well as his negotiating skills have benefited the Houston Goodwill on many occasions. In the early 2000s, Moore helped the Goodwill reinvent itself and remain financially stable after experiencing the challenges that come from being located in a large city. In 2007, Moore challenged the board of directors and leadership team to a faster growth rate than planned, and today, Goodwill Houston holds the record as one of the fastest-growing Goodwill organizations in the United States.

Moore’s financial investment company helps individuals and families build better futures by rebuilding credit. He became passionate about Goodwill and its mission because of the shared commonalities in helping people gain self-sufficiency. Moore personally works with many Goodwill program participants as a mentor. He also assisted a former Goodwill Achiever of the Year from Houston to find housing and an accessible automobile.

Moore has also served on the Goodwill Industries International Board of Directors and was its chair, which is an experience he says he treasures. During his tenure, he held the leadership positions of finance committee chair, treasurer and board vice chair. In addition, he has given his time and talent to Goodwill executives and boards to incorporate risk assessment outcomes into their strategic planning processes, while continuing to protect the brand and grow Goodwill’s mission.

Moore has also worked tirelessly to change the culture of the Houston Goodwill’s board of directors to be more forward thinking and innovative. His efforts have contributed to the successful transformation of the board into a new and open form of governance with total transparency among its members. Today, Goodwill Houston has no debt and has created a foundation to ensure the future of mission services in Houston. The local Goodwill credits much of that to Moore.

“Tommy has made a long-standing commitment to the success of Goodwill Industries of Houston in his volunteer board member position,” said Steve Lufburrow, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Houston. “Tommy’s notoriety and network have positioned Goodwill Houston to be considered for opportunities that we otherwise would not have had. But it doesn’t stop there with Tommy. He’s personable with our staff, our program participants and the goals of our organization. Tommy is Goodwill, through and through.”

The Volunteer Board Leader of the Year award recognizes and showcases outstanding leadership from volunteer board members who work to support and further the operations and mission of a member Goodwill organization. The winner demonstrates exceptional innovation in building and sustaining his/her local Goodwill organization; exemplary leadership and initiative; and significant contributions that benefit his/her local Goodwill and/or the entire Goodwill network.

Moore will receive his award at Goodwill Industries International’s annual meeting of the Delegate Assembly this June in Pittsburgh, PA.

ABOUT GOODWILL INDUSTRIES INTERNATIONAL
Goodwill Industries International (GII) is a network of 160 community-based, autonomous organizations in the United States and Canada with a presence in 13 other countries. For the past three years, Goodwill was ranked in the top five brands that inspired consumers the most with its mission in the World Value Index, commissioned by the creative agency, enso. Goodwill has been on Forbes’ list of top 20 most inspiring companies for three consecutive years, the only nonprofit featured on that list.

Local Goodwill organizations are innovative and sustainable social enterprises that offer job placement and training services, and other community-based programs by selling donated clothing and household items in more than 3,300 stores collectively and online at shopgoodwill.com®.

Goodwill helps people facing challenges to finding employment, including people with disabilities, veterans and military families, youth and young adults, older workers, people reintegrating into society, and others working to advance their careers. Local Goodwill organizations build revenues and expand employment opportunities by contracting with commercial, state, government and non-government organizations to provide a wide range of business services, including janitorial and grounds maintenance, flexible staffing, food service, manufacturing and contracts packaging, reverse logistics, document imaging and shredding, and laundry services.

Last year, local Goodwill organizations collectively placed more than 288,000 people in employment in the United States and Canada. In addition, more than 36 million people used computers and mobile devices to access Goodwill education, training, mentoring and online learning services to strengthen their skills, and more than two million people received in-person services.

Goodwill is both an icon and accessible neighbor: more than 82 percent of the U.S. population resides within 10 miles of a Goodwill location.
