U.S. Senator Robert P. Casey Jr. Honored with Goodwill® Policymaker Award

WASHINGTON, DC – Goodwill Industries International is pleased to honor U.S. Sen. Robert Casey Jr. (D-PA) as a recipient of its Goodwill Policymaker Award for 2015. The award recognizes a federal lawmaker who has clearly demonstrated support for Goodwill’s public policy priorities.
Sen. Casey was nominated by the Pennsylvania Association of Goodwills for his commitment to advancing Goodwill’s mission of helping people build careers and gain employment. The senator championed the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act. The legislation eases financial strains faced by individuals with disabilities by making tax-free savings accounts available to cover qualified expenses such as education, housing and transportation. It was signed into law by President Obama in December 2014.
Casey also introduced legislation that would allow parents of a child with a disability to access more information about educational options such as the opportunity to achieve a high school or college degree. The legislation, the Empowering Parents and Students through Information Act, seeks to clear up often confusing state guidelines and empower parents to make more informed decisions.
“We believe that Sen. Casey’s support has made a positive impact in the lives of people with disabilities and their families in Pennsylvania,” said Doug Gibboney, executive director for the Pennsylvania Association of Goodwills. “Goodwill is grateful for Sen. Casey’s commitment to supporting Goodwill’s mission of helping people find jobs and build careers.”
The award was presented on Tuesday, April 14 during a reception in Washington, DC, as part of Goodwill’s annual advocacy event.
