All young people can benefit from the support and guidance offered by a nurturing mentor. For opportunity youth and youth from underserved populations in particular, strong mentoring relationships can help foster positive life and social skills, bolster self-esteem, improve academic achievement, and promote leadership development. Youth mentees can also explore their future education and employment options and plan their career goals with the insights gained through their mentor’s professional experience and advice.

Goodwill and other community-based organizations play an important role in facilitating mentoring relationships for young people facing barriers to opportunity. In 2021, Goodwill provided employment, education, and support services to more than 156,000 individuals aged 16-24. Goodwill’s youth mentoring programs offer career development and exploration activities to prepare youth mentees to identify employment pathways, stay on track to complete high school, and prepare to successfully transition to postsecondary education and training. Local Goodwill organizations utilize federal resources to support youth mentoring services, including through programs like YouthBuild, Youth Mentoring Grants, and Reentry Employment Opportunities Grants for justice-involved youth and young adults.

January is National Mentoring Month. It’s a time to recognize and celebrate the meaningful impact that great mentors have had on our lives. It’s also a great opportunity to promote Goodwill mentoring programs and advocate for public investments in youth mentoring services in your community.
