My Story: Justin Throckmorton

I participated in the Day Services and Work Development Programs at Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa from April 2011 until July 2012. I also received job development services through the Supported Employment Program from December 2011 until July 2012, when Goodwill helped me obtain employment with Hy-Vee. Now, I have been at Hy-Vee for four months, and am currently receiving job coaching services from Goodwill.

Over the past year and a half, Goodwill has helped me overcome any obstacles my barrier has presented me. When I first started, I struggled to understand appropriate boundaries and actively listen to directions that were given to me by my superior.

The Day Services and Work Development Programs gave me the structured setting I needed in order to build those skills. Working with an employment specialist in the Supported Employment Program, I learned firsthand about the job searching process and how to present myself in a professional manner.

At Hy-Vee, I currently sack groceries, help load groceries into customers’ cars, and return shopping carts from the parking lot. My job coach currently helps me maintain my composure when things get busy at work and helps me communicate with my supervisor when I need something, like to take time off.

Overall, Goodwill has helped me overcome many obstacles to obtain a job that I really love. I look forward to continuing my relationship with Goodwill, and I look forward to working at Hy-Vee for a long, long time.
