My Goodwill Story – J.G.

This Best Friends Day, we’re celebrating the power of connection, encouragement and support through the story of J.G., a dedicated barista whose journey with Goodwill Industries of Greater Nebraska (Grand Island) has led to more than just a job. It’s led to a sense of purpose and a circle of friends. 

Before connecting with Goodwill, J.G. was struggling to find and maintain employment. His past made it difficult to get a foot in the door, but with the right support, he found an employer willing to give him a chance. That opportunity became one of his greatest accomplishments. 

Since starting his job in late April 2024, J.G. has made impressive strides. He’s not only working successfully but is also training for a team lead position. While there have been a few bumps along the way, his employer continues to encourage him, recognizing his potential and commitment. 

J.G. has already received a pay increase, and while he carefully balances his hours to maintain his Social Security benefits, he’s focused on building a brighter future. He’s now working toward moving into his own place, a goal that once felt out of reach. 

One of the most meaningful parts of J.G.’s journey has been the friendships he’s formed with his coworkers. What started as a job has become a community. His team has become his support. He’s also a great barista who brings not just skill but warmth and personality to every shift. 

J.G.’s story is a beautiful reminder that with the right support and a little faith, people can thrive. It’s also a reminder that sometimes, the best part of a job is the friendships you make along the way.
