How to Prepare for a Virtual Interview

If you or someone you know is looking for a job, you will note that the job market is quite different. While online job searching is not new, many other aspects of the process are taking place online. Let’s look at a few ways the job market is changing and how you can prepare for a virtual interview.

Before the pandemic, a typical in-person interview often began with hellos and handshakes with HR professionals and the hiring manager at the employer’s offices. As social distancing continues, your interviews may take place virtually via video or phone.

Many in-person job interview tips still apply to a virtual interview, such as:

• Wear professional attire.
• Research your potential employer and come prepared with questions.
• Be honest and authentic.
• Be professional in your body language and conversation — and remember to smile (they can hear it in your voice!).
• Follow up with a thank-you note or email.

A video conference job interview adds a few complexities; here are some tips for success:

• Test your technology in advance. Check that the camera and microphone on your computer or cell phone are working. Get a friend’s or career coach’s opinion on the quality of your video and audio before the interview, and find a technology alternative if you need one.
• Limit distractions. Find a quiet place in your home away from family or pets to meet with the employer. Sit near a window to take advantage of the natural light on your face.
• Pay close attention to your facial expressions. An interviewer will focus on your face during a video call and may not see the rest of your body language. Remember that actions like rolling your eyes or grimacing may be perceived negatively.
• Close the call professionally. After your interview, make sure you have left the virtual room and that your microphone and camera are turned off. You don’t want to find out later that you let you out a big sigh or that the hiring manager saw you rolling your eyes after you thought the interview was over.
