Authentic AI: Use AI as a Beat, not a Drummer

In my younger years, I was a modestly serious rapper and songwriter. And no, there are no links to my old music in this article.

One of the biggest points of pride for those involved in hip-hop culture in the “old days” was writing your own rhymes. Some rappers paid other artists to write for them. It was frowned upon by some, but it was certainly not uncommon.

I wrote most of my own material, but there were many times when someone helped spark an idea or expand on something I was working on. I’ve never been shy about getting someone’s input because it often helped me break through a creative wall. I’ve co-written songs, written lyrics to other people’s music and collaborated with talented artists who brought different perspectives and skills to the creative process.

One thing I never did was ask someone to write an entire song for me. Not because I looked down on people who did, but because I wanted to become a better writer, and improving my craft was part of that journey.

Now, there were plenty of things I couldn’t do. I couldn’t sing, read or write sheet music, or play an instrument. So, I regularly worked with vocalists and musicians who could help bring ideas to life by filling gaps I either couldn’t or didn’t want to fill myself. Looking back, I realized the creative process taught me something that feels surprisingly relevant today. Everyone needs assistance in some way. It’s about determining how and how much.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become one of the most talked-about technologies of our time. Its influence can be seen in our entertainment, education and workplaces. Whether we actively use it or not, AI is already shaping many aspects of our daily lives. As this technology becomes more common, I find myself thinking back to those experiences writing music. The question is no longer whether AI exists or whether people will use it. It does, we do and we will. The new question is, will it become a tool that helps us improve our skills, generate ideas and work more efficiently? Or will we rely on it so heavily that we stop developing those skills ourselves?

I am not here to tell you exactly where to draw that line. But I do think it is worth asking whether we are using AI to replace our effort or enhance it. And that may be one of the most important career questions of the AI era.

AI Is a Tool, Not a Substitute

One reason AI can generate strong opinions is that people use it in very different ways.

Some people use AI to brainstorm. Others use it to research. Some use it to summarize information, create outlines or improve communication. Others expect it to do all the thinking for them. That difference matters. Think about a calculator. It can help you solve a problem faster. It does not replace the need to understand what problem you are trying to solve. AI works much the same way. The most effective users are often not the people asking AI to do everything. They are the people using AI to help them do things better.

Start With Your Own Thinking

One of the easiest traps to fall into is letting AI become the starting point for every task.

Instead, consider beginning with your own ideas first.

  • What are you trying to accomplish?
  • What is your perspective?
  • What experience can you bring to the conversation?

Once you have a starting point, AI can help you refine, organize and expand your thinking.

The difference may seem small, but it matters.

When AI starts with your ideas, the final result is more likely to sound like you.

Verify Before You Trust

AI can be incredibly helpful. It can also be incredibly confident when it is wrong.

That is why critical thinking still matters.

Before using AI-generated information, take time to verify:

  • Important facts
  • References
  • Statistics
  • Dates
  • Recommendations

Trust, but verify.

Your reputation is attached to the information you share, not the technology that helped create it.

Keep Your Voice

One of the biggest risks of over relying on AI is losing your authentic voice.

Whether you are writing a résumé, preparing for an interview or drafting an email, people are ultimately trying to learn something about you.

Your experiences.

Your perspective.

Your personality.

AI can help improve communication. It should not erase the things that make you unique.

The goal is not to sound like artificial intelligence.

The goal is to communicate your intelligence more effectively.

Let AI Handle the Heavy Lifting

Used thoughtfully, AI can be a tremendous time-saver.

It can help:

  • Generate ideas
  • Create outlines
  • Organize information
  • Practice interview questions
  • Improve grammar and readability
  • Identify skill gaps
  • Explore career paths

In many ways, AI can function like a helpful assistant.

The key is remembering that assistants support decisions. They do not make them.

Find Your Rhythm

When I think back on those years writing music, I realize something important. The people who helped me along the way made my work better. They challenged ideas, offered suggestions and shared skills I did not have. But they never replaced my responsibility to learn, grow and create. I think AI works best the same way. Use it to brainstorm, improve, and save time. Just do not forget to bring your own thinking to the process.

Don’t hesitate to use AI.

Learn from it.

Experiment with it.

Innovate with it.

Just do not forget to move to the beat of your own drum.
