Cozy Up for Fall with These Goodwill Projects

Autumn is hitting us hard in the Northeast. In typical New England fashion, our weather was sunny and 80 degrees one week, then we were surprised with frost warnings the next. The chill now lingering in the air and the already-colorful leaves are putting me in the mood for hibernation. Someone please tell me I’m not the only one! Let’s all just settle in and ready our homes and ourselves for the cooler days ahead. Of course, that means we’ll have to start with a trip to Goodwill! Here’s what I’ll be looking for…

First, although I’m not ready to don a winter coat, I will happily start adding scarves to my daily attire again. They are such easy accessories that act as the cherry on top of any look. Infinity scarves are especially fun as they are unintimidating and you can even make them from scratch according to your own tastes! If you don’t know how, you will definitely want to read these tutorials from Kendra of the blog New Song Women. She will help you learn three quick ways to take Goodwill sheets, shirts or sleepers and turn them into a one-of-a-kind circle scarf.

Next up on my shopping list are two beautiful sheets so I can follow in Amy Johnson’s footsteps and create a darling (and oh-so-cozy) simple-sew quilt! No quilting experience? No problem! Goodwill Industries of San Antonio (TX) asked Amy to put together a tutorial that will take us readers through the piece-of-cake process one step at a time. Will you join me in giving it a try?

While I’m out looking for scarf and quilt supplies, I’ll be certain to swing through the home décor section. Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina (Greenville) reader Ashley was able to pull together a lovely fall display for her home for less than $20 thanks to Goodwill’s low prices. Click through to the full post to see the rest of the arrangement if you need a little fall furnishing inspiration for your own home.

My favorite thing about shopping at Goodwill (other than the low prices!) is knowing that eighty-three percent of collective revenues raised through the sale of donated goods support and grow Goodwill’s critical community-based programs and services. That means that 83 cents of every dollar I spend goes directly back into the health and well-being of my community. The same is true for your local Goodwill stores. If I have to step out into the brisk autumn air (I’ve got to leave the house some time, I suppose!), at least my destination – Goodwill – is a favorable one. Happy fall!
