On August 17, National Thrift Shop Day will be upon us, along with the perfect set of excuses to celebrate how amazing secondhand shopping can be, not only for you and your family but also for the environment. Thrift shopping is exercise; it’s a way to get the creative juices going, spend the afternoon with friends and create a low-risk space for you to test and hone your personal style.
Thrifting has become a preferred way to shop for so many because each time you walk into a thrift store like Goodwill, you know you are walking into a serendipitous world of the unexpected. You could come across exactly what you were looking for or find something even better that you may not have thought of on your own. Thrifting is a treasure hunt, and Goodwill makes it easy to participate, both by shopping and donating.

Why cover your body with synthetic fabrics and plastics when you can thrift chic, organic materials (like cotton, silk, wool, cashmere) with a designer label for less? It’s not hard to drool over this incredible St. John cashmere sweater found by this Goodwill shopper for a mere $5.99. At regular retail price, this sweater is priced at more than $600. If you were shopping in a regular fast fashion retail store, for $5.99 you wouldn’t even be able to buy one item, let alone something made from natural materials.

Start them young!
Teaching your family the thrill of thrifting can create a lifetime of future shopping trips and a smart shopper mentality. Shopping secondhand for the little ones makes so much sense, knowing they grow out of their clothes quickly and are still working through their personal styles.
