Clearing the Clutter in Your Career Journey
Spring is in the air, and with it comes a familiar tradition in my house. Every year, we set out a couple of Goodwill® donation boxes in the front room and start going through closets, drawers and all the hidden corners that tend to collect things over time. It usually turns into a bit of a negotiation about what stays and what goes, and more often than not, I don’t win those debates. But I digress.
While cleaning out an old backpack, I came across a copy of my résumé and a stack of business cards that I had collected over the past few years. It made me realize something. I hadn’t updated my résumé in a while, and I hadn’t followed up with many of those contacts either.
That moment got me thinking. How many of us could benefit from a spring reset in our career journey?
Whether you are actively looking for a new opportunity or feeling comfortable in your current role, it is easy to let your career path collect dust if you are not paying attention. Just like our homes, sometimes it takes a change in season to step back, clear things out and make space for growth.
If you have been putting in effort but not seeing results, or simply feeling a little stuck, this might be your sign to do some spring career cleaning.
Clear Out What’s Not Working
The first step in any kind of cleaning is being honest about what no longer serves you.
Take a moment to reflect on what has not been working. Are you getting interviews but not offers? Are you applying and not hearing back at all? Identifying the pattern is the first step toward making a meaningful change.

It can be frustrating to put in effort and feel like nothing is changing. But sometimes, the issue is not how hard you are working. It is whether your approach needs to be refreshed.
Letting go of outdated approaches does not mean starting over; it means making room for something better.
Organize Your Approach
Once you have cleared out what is not working, the next step is to bring some structure to your efforts.
A job search or career transition can feel overwhelming, especially when it is unorganized. Applications get submitted, contacts get saved and opportunities come and go. Without a clear system, it is easy to lose track of where you have been and where you are trying to go.
Consider creating a simple way to organize your efforts:
This does not have to be complicated. The goal is to be intentional.
When your approach is organized, your confidence often follows. You are no longer guessing or reacting. You are making decisions with purpose.
Make Space for Growth
One of the most important parts of cleaning is not just what you remove, but what you make room for.

Taking time to clear the clutter is not about being perfect. It is about being intentional.
When you take a step back, reflect on what is working and make small adjustments, you create space for new opportunities to take root.
And, once that space is created, you are in a better position to move forward with purpose.
