Your boss calls you into their office.Ā āAre you looking for another job?āĀ Gulp!Ā Now, what?
Why are they asking?Ā How should you respond?
In all likelihood, your manager suspects youāre looking and is seeking to confirm that hunch.Ā Asking that question for no reason seems unlikely; assume theyāve heard or sensed something that prompted their question.
Letās assume you are looking or interviewing.Ā Admitting youāre looking for another position could make you appear disloyal or uncommitted to your current job.Ā Instead of lying or being forthcoming, you could dodge the question. Ask why theyāre asking.Ā āWhy do you ask?āĀ Or, āShould I be looking?ā With either dodge, you could gain insight as to what prompted their question.
Your boss may say, āWell, Iād heard you werenāt happy and were out looking.āĀ Do you use this opportunity to voice your concerns that have you looking for a job?Ā It depends on your boss. Ā If they say something such as, āLetās talk.Ā I value your work,ā then perhaps you discuss why you are looking for other opportunities.
If you choose to discuss it, donāt dwell on negatives.Ā Talk about seeking continued challenge and professional growth.Ā Itās not uncommon for workers to change jobs and/or companies many times in their careers.Ā Donāt be surprised if youāre asked whether youāre looking; be ready with a response.Ā Good luck!
