GII Digital Marketing Manager
In honor of Black History Month, we’re celebrating the individuals whose journeys embody resilience, purpose and pride. Joshua’s story stands out as a powerful example.
Not many people can say they were shot nine times and survived, but that’s what happened to Joshua. When he was initially brought to the hospital, doctors didn’t think he’d pull through. After months on the mend, the next challenge was being able to walk again. Medical staff thought it was unlikely due to the severity of Joshua’s injuries. But they underestimated his perseverance.
He beat the odds and was able to walk again, albeit with some difficulty. Joshua wanted to start work again, but needed somewhere that would be understanding of his mobility issues. He was referred to Goodwill Industries of the Upstate/Midlands South Carolina (Greenville) because of its career services.
Finding the Right Job
Thankfully, the team knew a job that would be a perfect fit for Joshua. It was a detailing and pressure washing company, but more importantly, the owner had his own lived experience and became a mentor to Joshua.
Because of support from shoppers, donors and funders, Goodwill® was also able to purchase the uniform Joshua needed for his new position. Despite his mobility issues, he insisted on being trained in an area that would challenge and strengthen his body. After some time on the job, Joshua’s difficulty walking became unnoticeable.
You might think he stopped there, but Joshua had bigger dreams. He is planning to attend college and wants to obtain his CDL. He found a full-time position with a food distribution company that paid him a living wage and plans to sponsor him through driving school to obtain his CDL.
What would have stopped many people in their tracks hasn’t slowed Joshua down. We’re proud of his determination and look forward to seeing what he’ll accomplish next.
