DIY: Make This Halloween-Themed Cupcake Stand

Halloween cupcake stand with orange-and-black striped base, green and yellow frosting, a fake spider, and an orange bow.

In the weeks leading up to Halloween, as people look to get creative and put together the “be-all, end-all” Halloween costume,  an area that gets overlooked is housewares. If you’re hosting a Halloween bash, there’s no need to spend lots of money on decorations.  It may take a little planning, but if you know what you’re looking for, you can get in and out of there for under $20. Since you never know exactly what you’ll find, it’s a good idea to have a couple of options, and know what items you’ll need to find in order to execute your Halloween décor.

My two ideas were a big Halloween themed cupcake stand and/or drinking glasses that I could paint black and then drip red craft paint down the sides to look like blood.  I loaded up the cart with dishwares, but then happened to see an orange-and-black striped witch hat in the Halloween theme aisle. Instantly, I had my idea.

I grabbed the hat and a large vase that flared out at the top, and a lovely oval shaped silver tray. I gathered up a few household tools and materials that I needed to craft this one of a kind cupcake stand. I collected my scissors, hot glue gun, hot glue stick, a stapler and a 12” piece of black ribbon and was ready to go!

The witch hat went right over the top of the inverted vase to give the stand its base.  I cut the hat brim and all the way up the hat ‘cone’ until I came close to the top.

At that point, I just grabbed some straight pins, and pinned the hat to fit snugly around the vase. The next thing was to remove the hat and to staple the hat fabric together along the pin lines.

To disguise the staples, glue a piece of black ribbon in place.

The top of the witch hat had to be snipped off so that the silver tray could be added.
