My Goodwill Story: Christopher

As we celebrate the 4th of July, we’re surrounded by American flags, fireworks and barbeques. However, independence means a lot more for those who have struggled hard to achieve it.

That was the case for Christopher. After involvement with the justice system, he had a difficult time finding employment. He wanted so badly to be independent but found that his background still stood in his way.

That’s when a case manager at the behavioral health program he was enrolled in referred him to Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona (Tucson).

Goodwill was able to get Chris enrolled in a ten-week warehouse training program with a community partner. While in this training, he also received one-on-one career search assistance, interview tips, résumé updating and support services to supply him with needed tools and work clothes from Goodwill.

Growing in a New Role 

Shortly after the training program, Chris found full-time employment. As a diligent employee, he was focused on doing everything he could to advance in his new role. That hard work paid off, and he was promoted. He’s now working toward becoming a manager.

Thanks to his new job, Chris has been able to move into his own apartment and finally has the independence he was looking for.

That independence has also improved his personal life. He’s now more confident and approachable. Chris even says his anxiety has improved, and he’s able to prioritize his life better.

Chris now enjoys being a role model for his colleagues. When talking about his experience with Goodwill, he says, “Goodwill promotes continuous improvement and encourages everyone to grow and advance.  I have learned to set short-term and long-term goals for myself, and my future is brighter than it has ever been.”
