My Goodwill Story – Corey

World Book Day is often about the stories that transport us, and for Corey, his story came to life through technical manuals and digital scripts that could transform his future. It began with a recommendation from a family member and a conversation with Danielle, a career navigator at Goodwill of the Heartland (Cedar Rapids, IA). Together, they utilized the Goodwill Opportunity Accelerator® (OA), a personalized framework designed to meet individuals exactly where they are.

For Corey, that journey began with a career matching quiz and a deep dive into his existing strengths. “We went over different positions and picked a list I was interested in,” Corey says. “Among them was information technology. We decided to do a test of my computer knowledge, and I scored decently well.”

Mapping the Plot: From Skills to Certifications

The OA is built to transition people from initial interest to long-term career success. With a clear focus on the IT field, Corey moved into the skill-building phase of his journey.

He immersed himself in a variety of resources, including digital skills assessments and specialized “WOW” courses. With the guidance of his instructor, Isaac, and career insights from navigators Sarah and Rich, Corey earned two major industry credentials: the Google IT Support Professional and the Google UX Web Design certificates.

Balancing the Narrative: Meeting Immediate Needs

A key part of the OA is ensuring that a person’s immediate needs are met while they work toward their long-term dreams. In July 2024, while still completing his classes, Corey applied for and accepted a part-time position at the local Goodwill outlet.

This role provided steady employment and a supportive work environment while Corey continued his technical training. Today, he remains a valued member of the outlet team as he actively interviews for a position that will launch his long-term career in the IT industry.

The Power of the Next Chapter

Corey’s journey is a testament to the idea that with the right framework and a lot of heart, anyone can change their trajectory. His growth in confidence and technical skill is proof that the middle of the story is often where the most important transformation happens.

As Corey reminds us: “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”
