My Goodwill Story: Darren

This time of year, amidst the hustle and bustle, we’re all thinking about how much we must be thankful for. After all, that’s what Thanksgiving is all about. With that in mind, we want to share the story of someone thankful for the new direction he has been able to take his life.

Darren served in the U.S. Army and, after service, was homeless. He was living in transitional housing offered by Upstate Warrior Solutions in South Carolina. Without a job, he wasn’t sure how he’d be able to get on his feet.

That’s when Upstate Warrior Solutions recommended he contact Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina. Darren wanted to complete CDL training courses but needed financial help to enroll.

Goodwill got Darren enrolled in the courses and provided him with additional support services to help him work toward independence and self-sufficiency.

It wasn’t long before Darren had a new set of skills and started looking for work. Then, he was offered a position with Western Express.

With Darren’s hard work, he went from living in a shelter to a job that helped him independently keep a roof over his head. The support was exactly what he wanted.

While we’re thankful Goodwill could be there to support this veteran on his journey, he’s thankful for the people who helped him along the way. Darren said, “Thanks to Stacy and Goodwill, I have achieved a dream to drive trucks. I would recommend Goodwill to anyone, especially veterans.”
