Bring Winter Vibes into Your Home with These Goodwill Décor Hacks

The changing of the seasons brings to mind a strange perception of time – especially in the wake of the last year and a half. Time sometimes seems to move so slowly, other times more so like you blink and somehow weeks or months have gone by. It can be hard to anchor ourselves in the present, especially when it can be so unpredictable, but by letting yourself focus on the small things, the little moments that together make up our lives, you might find a way to become more grounded and appreciate what’s around you right then and there in the moment.

I’ve found that one of the easiest and most fun ways to do this is by marking the changing of the seasons with a transformation of indoor atmosphere through festive home décor. I love seeing how everyone brings their personalities into their décor through the gems they find shopping second hand at Goodwill. Décor may be seasonal, but it can still be sustainable and doesn’t have to break the bank. Below, I’m excited to share some examples of décor hacks from Goodwill shoppers like yourself — if you have décor inspiration of your own, tag @goodwillintl on Instagram for the chance to be featured in a future blog post!

1. Festive Display Shelf

What I love so much about this festive kitchen is that it can be so versatile and easy to switch up for every season. This look is certainly for the minimalists out there – since the shelves are lacking cabinets to hide behind – but by going with neutral tones for the ceramics and sticking with light wood for the shelves and measuring spoons, this thrift shopper was able to make this wall festive with little effort. I love the look of putting hot cocoa mix into a glass jar, alongside a jar of marshmallows, peppermints and a bundle of cinnamon sticks peeking out of a nearby mug. In this case, the decorations are not only seasonal but also edible – which is perfect when it comes to sustainability. The sprinkling of mini evergreen trees and boughs alongside the hot cocoa sign at the top of the shelf makes it perfect for cozy snow day afternoons indoors.

2. Don’t Underestimate the Power of a Garland

Seasonal décor shouldn’t have to be stressful. I love the minimalist look of this entryway mirror and shelf because it’s something that can be repurposed year-round – the candlesticks can stay for fall and winter and be swapped out for something more floral in the warmer months. The small white church can stick around for the holidays, but also be swapped for something more seasonal for other parts of the year – easily enough too thanks to the home goods section of your favorite Goodwill store. When it comes to this look though, it’s the garland wrapped tastefully around the mirror that makes it. The design almost tricks the eye into thinking it’s a wreath, when in fact it’s a beautiful, frosted garland that completes the seasonal look. Garlands aren’t just for winter of course, you can DIY your own for just about any season or holiday.

3. Even Tradition Can Get Updated Sometimes

As I was scrolling through the tagged feed on the @goodwillintl Instagram, I knew I had to feature this holiday set up. You don’t need red and green to say “Christmas” anymore, instead you can put your personality into the mix like this quirky, whimsical look in the image above. Piecing something like this together can take time, but as you explore your local Goodwill home selections, it becomes a bit easier to spot something that speaks to you as a perfect fit. It might surprise you how after just a few trips you’ll find the pieces for the perfect holiday set up that’s completely unique to your home.
