Easy Pop Culture Costumes for Halloween

Halloween season is upon us again, which brings with it the perfect opportunity to poke fun at pop-culture moments or pay homage to favorite TV shows. It’s a holiday that even we adults can get into, get creative and embrace our silly side. And who wouldn’t? I think we can all use a happy distraction. Plus it falls on a weekend this year!

Goodwill has ALWAYS been the go-to place to get your DIY Halloween on, and our research estimates that pop-culture references are this year’s hot tickets for spooky celebrations. I’m here to help you make it happen. These are some that I’m psyched about this year, and they can be easily cobbled together from Goodwill items that you’ll probably be able to use long past November 1.

1. Ted Lasso (or any of the Ted Lasso characters, honestly….)

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve probably heard of the hit show Ted Lasso, featuring my favorite fellow Kansas Citian Jason Sudeikis on Apple TV. It’s a costume that’s sure to bring a smile to lots of faces in the neighborhood. Just ask this mom! And don’t forget to tape a hand drawn yellow “BELIEVE” sign over your front door for the full effect.

2. Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala

Ok, hear me out. This is so basic it hurts, but *so* on point at the same time.

And there are so many ways it can go. Are you dressed as *her* or the *meme*? Are you dressed as a mute button? Or a very expensive shadow? Who knows. It’s the perfect costume to add a bit of mystery to the Halloween party. Don’t want to be recognized? Perfect, she didn’t either! Plus, it will definitely put pieces in your closet that you can use year long.

Bonus points if you have a friend that can dress up as your sister and shout, “Kim? Is that YOU?” as you walk around all night. It’s the gift that keeps giving.

Want more of a Kim K costume challenge? This one is a classic, too, and it involves wiring and tulle if you dare.

3. Blippi

Well, now that I look at it– half of this costume could be Ted Lasso. Which makes me wonder…… has anyone ever seen them in a room together?

Blippi is the YouTube sensation that your kids will binge for hours on end, but the synthesizer audio alone coming from the other room may push you to the very brink of your own sanity. My kids love this show, even if he’s just bipping and bopping around a farm or some random place, so I can’t complain too much. He convinced my kid to try a blueberry once, so I guess he’s alright.

It may just be a few bright accessories layered on top of some dad pants, but it’s not truly a Blippi costume without the signature Blippi giggle, so you’d better practice if you want to pull it off.

Goodwill is your go-to place to find your costume pieces this year, and every year. Whether it’s a DIY idea or a store-bought one from last year ready for a second spin around the block and a sugar rush, Goodwill has you covered. The bonus? You’ll find stuff you can use on any day of the year, too!

Shopping at Goodwill for your Halloween costume gets your creative juices flowing and helps save the planet by diverting waste from landfills. You may be on the hunt for candy door-to-door again this year, but the real sweet treat is that your purchases are helping your neighbors get job training so they can support their families and thrive in your community, too. Not just on Halloween, but every day of the year.
