Recreate Kate and Tully’s Looks from Firefly Lane This Halloween With The Help of Goodwill

Based on the book by Kristin Hannah, the Firefly Lane TV series took the Netflix world by storm with a story of a deep friendship between two women, following them from their teenage years into adulthood. The story takes place flipping between different points in their lives, giving insight into their personalities and friendship through different poignant stories. Season 1 took place shifting between the 70s and 80s for the most part, and Season 2 – which is expected to be released in 2022 – will get into the early 2000s. Firefly Lane lends a ton of great inspiration to a thrifted costume because of the vintage looks that almost match what the characters – Tully and Kate – wear throughout each time period. Of course, they also make for a great costume to wear out on Halloween with your BFF too!

According to our 2021 Halloween Study, this year 3 in 4 Americans plan to celebrate Halloween and 28% of people who plan to wear a costume this year will draw inspiration from pop culture trends or a character from a movie, TV show, or book. To find the perfect Firefly Lane-inspired DIY costumes, I headed to my local Goodwill in Brooklyn, NY. I was scanning the racks for anything Tully or Kate might have worn on the show and came out with some great options.

Kate’s Young Adult Working Look

Above, I pulled together some awesome finds that together – with a pair of giant oversized glasses – can perfect Kate’s work look for her first job at the news station. In the show, Kate wears a lot of blouses with a top tie (like in the screenshot from the series above!) and pairs them with fun pants. I got excited about this outfit not only because it was so fitting for a Kate costume, but also because each piece was such a great deal.

The top was highlighted in the store as a Goodwill “Good Pick” and as a result had a heftier pricetag ($19.99) than most other items in the store, due to its condition and the quality of the brand. The pants were new with tags Brooks Brothers pants that had a tag on them for $108, but were being sold at Goodwill for just $7.99. It was definitely a great day for pants at this Goodwill in Downtown Brooklyn, because while shopping around for costume inspiration I also found myself the perfect pair of high-waisted flare khaki pants from Vince, also for just $7.99.

Young Tully Boho Look

During the earlier parts of their friendship and in flashbacks throughout the show that shed light on their pasts, Tully and Kate wear more 70s style looks. Tully in particular wears clothes that are more of a boho vibe, including flowy blouses, long flared skirts, vests and suede. I was excited when I came across these two pieces at Goodwill because I’m almost positive at one point in the show that Tully wears something super similar! The top is a fun French Connection blouse and the skirt has a suede tie on the waist so you can cinch it and make it more form-fitting.

Whether you choose to go the Firefly Lane route for Halloween this year or draw inspiration from another favorite show, Goodwill is your one-stop shop for costume materials at a can’t beat price. Many locations also have great selections of already together costumes too – for the whole family. I’ve been to two different Goodwill stores in the past week and have seen everything from popular Marvel character costumes (many of which were still new with tags on), to an orange M&M costume, to a cool witch costume.

If you don’t know what you want to be for Halloween this year just head into your local Goodwill store for inspiration – I’m sure you’ll find something that will spark the beginning of a creative costume. Be sure to tag @goodwillintl throughout your shopping and DIY costume process too, for a chance to be featured on our channels or in an upcoming blog!
