My Story: Darrell Mallard

As a young man, Darrell made poor life choices and ended up living in an environment filled with violence, drugs and alcohol. Although he got his life back on track, a bout with cancer caused him to have to leave the job he loved and regress back into substance abuse. The job he found at Goodwill gave him the stability he needed to progress in life and support his family. “Today, I am a better man, husband and father,” he says.

I have a confession to make. Although I love collecting kitchen gadgets at thrift stores, I hate cooking. The mess and the measuring completely exhaust me. Luckily, my husband-to-be loves the process, so I don’t starve! But, to be fair, I’m trying to spend more time in the kitchen. They noted that many of our achievements depend on a public-private partnership that exists between Goodwill and government programs that leverage our resources and expertise. Unfortunately, this public-private partnership is becoming lopsided. Over the course of the past decade, we have aggressively worked to increase our capacity to do more, while government resources have steadily declined.
