This week the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program turns 23. A human services program that provides assistance temporarily to families with children in poverty has been proven to be both vital to short- and long-term success for families and children.
Meet Robert Frank, a donation attendant and utility worker at a Goodwill store in suburban Chicago. Robert suffered physical abuse as a child, including blows to the head that left him with a cognitive disability. With support from Goodwill, he learned to read and write. At age 65, he read a book for the first time, giving him new confidence and a more positive outlook on life.
Two Goodwills joined forces to help move people into personal stability. One year later, both nonprofits have benefited and so have many people who are now in careers that fulfil and sustain them.
