It’s finally turning into that season where you leave work most days and the sun is still out. Where you can walk around outside in the middle of the day and find yourself squinting at the sun shining down on you. Now that the snowstorms have finally come to an end and flowers are starting to bloom, love is certainly back in the warm springtime air!
April is Second Chance Month, a time to raise awareness of the challenges facing people exiting the justice system and to spotlight the important work being done to empower these individuals to successfully reenter their communities, including programs and services offered by local Goodwill® agencies across the country.
Just about everyone I know is, in some way, striving to become more eco-conscious (yay!). But at times the whole process can seem overwhelming. Don’t let yourself feel too bogged down; even small changes can make big progress. If we can each adjust our habits little by little, over time we can positively impact the planet in a major way without feeling overwhelmed.

On Thursday, April 11, more than 100 representatives from local Goodwill® organizations across the United States — including executives, board members, program participants, and other advocates — met with Members of Congress and staff for Goodwill’s annual Goodwill on the Hill (formerly known as Advocacy Day).

Since the 2008 inception of the annual Goodwill® on the Hill event, nearly 1,500 Goodwill advocates have conducted more than 2,500 Hill visits. This includes nearly 170 program participants and family members who have benefited from scholarships and told their stories to lawmakers.

John Dziewa was 17 years old when a diving accident changed his life forever. A quadriplegic he underwent months of rehabilitation; and after graduating from high school he was unsure what was next for him. He envisioned a future of dependence on others but his family was persistent, he could do so much more.
Two years ago, Jonathan Tingley, moved back home. But unlike some “boomeranging” millennials, Jonathan needs constant care because he has disabilities including autism. His mother, Nancy Moore, didn’t want him sitting at home watching TV all day; she has dreams for her son to become more independent. That’s when she connected with LifeWorks, Goodwill®’s program for adults with disabilities.
