My Goodwill Blog – Robert S.

When Robert first connected with Goodwill Southern Arizona (Tucson) through the Pima County Adult Probation Office, he wasn’t just looking for a paycheck. He was looking for a career path that could sustain a different kind of life. He knew that a full life transition required more than just a “help wanted” sign; it required a strategy.

Robert enrolled in the Ignite 2.0 program with a specific goal: to increase his earning potential and find a stable, high-paying career. While he already had the drive, he used the program to gather the necessary tools, working through a six-week college capacity workshop, earning his GED and securing an industry-recognized ServSafe certificate.

Stacking the Skills for Success

Robert didn’t stop at the basics. With the support of his case manager and career coach, he began to bridge the gap between where he was and where he wanted to be. He focused on mentorship and college readiness, eventually transitioning from the Ignite program to the halls of Pima Community College.

Today, Robert is a full-time student in the machine tool technology program, maintaining a “hyper-focus” on his studies while managing the realities of adult life.

Balancing Work and Ambition

A second chance is often built on the ability to balance the present with the future. Robert also applied for and earned a position as a full-time retail associate at Goodwill®. For Robert, this role isn’t just a job; it’s the engine that powers his education. He plans to continue working with the Goodwill team until he completes his associate’s degree, using his employment to maintain stability while he masters the precision of machine tools.

A Vision of Independence

Robert’s journey isn’t about luck; it’s about an action plan executed with discipline. He has a clear vision for his “Version 2.0”: finishing his degree, launching a career as a professional machinist and moving into his own apartment.

As Robert puts it: “You can accomplish anything you want to if you’re willing to put in the hard work.”

By taking advantage of the resources available and putting in the hours — both on the clock and in the classroom — Robert is proving that a second chance is an opportunity to build something better.

Support a Second Chance

Robert’s story is a testament to what happens when determination meets opportunity. This Second Chance Month, you can help others build their own paths to independence.
