Creating Opportunities Beyond the Election

Some election results are still being tabulated and there are many unknowns concerning what the outcomes at the federal, state, and local levels will mean for the interests of Goodwill, the charitable sector, and those we serve.

What we do know is that there are several opportunities to raise awareness of Goodwill’s mission, build new relationships and strengthen current ones, and increase our public policy influence.

Building Relationships

Newly elected lawmakers at all levels of government will take office for the first time in January. Now is the time to forge relationships. Consider sending a welcome letter noting the issues of concern and the things you look forward to working on together. Invite the lawmaker and staff to visit your agency to see the mission in action.

Pay attention to the committees which have jurisdiction over the issues that you care most about. Many committees at the state and federal level may have new leadership or new members. This is an opportunity to educate and serve as a resource.

Leveraging Data and Success Stories

As budget cuts and potential to eliminate certain programs may be looming, data and evidence-based practices will be key when advocating to keep program or increase funding. Local Goodwill organizations serve as incubators of innovation in communities all over the country. Take advantage of the opportunity to leverage data and results to communicate impact, and pair the data with personal success stories of individuals served.

Policy Priorities

Congress and the incoming Trump administration will have their priority issues which they will try to advance through executive action and the legislative and regulatory process. Goodwill Industries International staff are working on a policy agenda to frame the issues on which we will focus. We know regardless of who is in control of Congress or if we have a split House and Senate, tax policy and federal funding for critical programs will be prioritized.

Helping to Bridge the Divide

While pundits are examining voter turnout and motivations, we stand ready to offer solutions.  Local Goodwill organizations have a role to play as a partner, a convener, a service provider, and an employer to provide opportunities for individuals who feel they have none.
