Whether you are a Baby Boomer or from Generation X, the workplace is much different from the beginning of your career. This week, I offer advice for those of us who fall into the seasoned worker category.
#1. Serve as a mentor for those beginning their careers You probably benefited from other workers’ wisdom years ago; demonstrate your willingness to give back.
Sharing your career experiences demonstrates your willingness to mentor colleagues and comfort working with diverse generations.
#2. Embrace changes in technology Those of us with decades of experience have witnessed many technological changes. From manual typewriters to word processors to computers; from fax machines to emailed documents; from Rolodex to LinkedIn; from cell phones the size of milk cartons to smartphones; the Internet; and countless other innovations. Technology can help you be more efficient while being fun to learn. Showing how you have kept up with technology is valuable to employers.
#3. Listen and consult You have the knowledge, experience and wisdom that comes with time; be careful to not come across as a know-it-all. Be a good listener and offer consultation.
#4. Attitude is key You can reflect on and communicate your experiences and accomplishments. You can control your attitude; be an encourager, someone who lifts up the people around them. Choose to see the good and positive, in people and situations.
