August is National Black Business Month, a time to recognize and uplift Black entrepreneurs and changemakers. For Danrae, this month celebrates a turning point in his journey from uncertainty to purpose.
A Promise to His Mother, a Path to His Future
Danrae came to Goodwill Kentucky (Louisville) through a court referral, looking for a fresh start. He had a vision to find a job, start a business and make his mom proud. Goodwill® supported him with job readiness training, basic digital skills and an internship to help him build confidence and experience. When Danrae shared his dream of entrepreneurship, the team at Goodwill Kentucky connected him to a training program designed to turn ideas into action.
Danrae’s motivation runs deep. His mother was recently diagnosed with cancer, and he made her a promise to do something meaningful with his life. That promise became his guiding light for everything he accomplished.
From Court Referral to College Dreamer
With support from Goodwill’s nonprofit career services, Danrae applied to college and was accepted to Kentucky State University. He’s now working toward a degree in business administration, using our supportive service funds to cover books and school supplies. Every step forward brings him closer to his dream of owning a business and puts a smile on his mother’s face.
Danrae’s story shows what’s possible when someone commits to their future and gets the support they need to move forward. If you or someone you know is looking for career support, reach out to the Goodwill career center closest to you. Our local teams are ready to help you take the next step.
