Each year, National Read a Book Day kicks off the quieting down of summer into fall, a change of routine and a move into all things cozy. If you’re like me, hanging onto the last threads of summer vacation and not quite ready to dive into all things pumpkin spice, this bookish holiday on September 6th is a great way to ease into the transition of the seasons, take a break from the never-ending screen time and crack open a book.

Benefits of Reading
Whether you’re a fan of fiction, romance, history, or are just trying to get through your first book in years, you can surprise yourself by turning a new page this September and letting the story take you somewhere new for a while
There are so many benefits to reading books. It’s a great way to relax and destress, letting your mind decompress from reality for a bit or giving yourself the space to reflect on your life while reading about someone else’s. That journey into someone else’s story helps generate more understanding and empathy for others. It can also help expand our capacity for critical thinking, the importance of which can never be overstated.

As if those reasons weren’t enough to make you want to pick up a book, books can also be a charming part of your home décor. Coffee table books tell anyone who walks into your home something about your interests and curated bookshelves can be a great way to brighten any room with a splash of color.
Unique Book Finds

Book shopping secondhand also means that you can bring home some beautiful vintage finds and rare covers at a fraction of their original retail price. You might find something you wouldn’t find in a traditional retail store and take that special find home without breaking the bank. This Goodwill® book shopper found a beautiful vintage cover in mint condition for less than $6. In a rare and antique bookstore, the price could be ten times as much or more.
But that’s not all you’ll find on the shelves at Goodwill. I’ve found everything from beach reads to new releases to signed copies of books from some of my favorite authors. If you’re book shopping for more recent releases and still want to support the authors, thrift the books that speak to you secondhand and then leave a review for the author on another bookish platform to support them too.
