As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, we have an opportunity to reflect on our history, reaffirm our shared values, and look ahead to the future we are building together.
At Goodwill®, that future begins with opportunity. America’s 250th should be a moment to recommit to the promise that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive. That promise is exactly what Goodwill has been advancing for nearly 125 years.
Founded in 1902 by Reverend Edgar J. Helms, our organization was built on a simple but powerful idea: work creates dignity, purpose, and opportunity. What began as a way to help immigrants and struggling families in Boston has grown into a movement that continues to help people build better futures through the power of work.
Over the decades, that model evolved to meet the needs of each new generation. During the Great Depression, Goodwill provided employment pathways when work was scarce. Goodwill became an early leader in vocational rehabilitation for people with disabilities. Through wars, economic downturns, technological changes, and shifting labor markets, Goodwill adapted while remaining grounded in the belief that work creates dignity, purpose, and opportunity.
Yet as we celebrate America’s achievements, we must also acknowledge the challenges that lie ahead.
A growing federal deficit, climate-related impacts, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, and shifting economic conditions are transforming the world of work. The question is not whether change is coming, it’s whether everyone will have the opportunity to benefit from it.
These challenges are significant—but so is our capacity to respond – and the opportunity is now.
Throughout American history, periods of disruption have often become periods of innovation. Every major economic transformation has created new opportunities for those prepared to seize them. The challenge before us is ensuring that everyone has access to those opportunities.
That is where Goodwill’s mission has never been more relevant.
Goodwill’s network is helping people gain skills in growing industries, access digital tools, earn credentials, and prepare for careers that did not exist just a few years ago. We are helping workers build not only technical skills, but also the adaptability and confidence needed to thrive in a changing economy.
America’s 250th anniversary is more than a celebration of where we have been—it is an invitation to imagine where we are going.
The next chapter of the American story will be written by the people Goodwill serves, hires, trains, empowers, and partners with every day. That’s a future worth working toward together.
Happy 250th America! Let us honor our history, embrace innovation, expand opportunity, and ensure that every person has the chance to contribute to—and benefit from—America’s next chapter.
