Hello readers. In this blog, we will talk about how to search for jobs. There are many ways to do so, and some ways are better than others. Stay tuned for job search tips and tricks!

Identifying the Right Job Listings

If you know what job you’re looking for, please continue reading. If you haven’t yet decided on a career path, please check out the blog titled Securing a Bright Career Future: 10 Key Factors to Consider.

Now that you have identified the job you’re looking for, it’s time to find job listings that fit this role. The next step is finding the right keywords to use while searching job posting sites. You can see key terms to use on O*Net or My Next Move. To learn more about these two sites, click HERE.

Finding keywords to search for could also be a job for artificial intelligence (AI). My two favorite AI websites are ChatGPT & Poe.com. Both of these websites have a “free” version. Here’s a simple prompt to find keywords: What keywords should I use when looking for a __________ role?

Using Job Search Websites and Apps

Many job search websites and apps can help you with your search. Some of the most popular are Indeed, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn. The key to getting the most out of job search websites is filtering for the right results. You should start with a broad search and gradually narrow it by applying filters. Here are some tips and tricks for using filter options:

Networking

Networking means talking to people to learn about job opportunities. As an employment specialist, I used to counsel individuals to make a list of anyone they knew who may be helpful to network with. They could then reach out to these individuals to inquire about open positions. Your network is beneficial if there is a specific employer you would like to work for and you know someone who already works there. A personal introduction rather than just being someone in the applicant pool is a step up.

You can also network online, like on websites such as LinkedIn, or in person, like at a job fair. A LinkedIn profile is something you will want to be very intentional about. Making connections on this site should also be very deliberate.

When networking, the best practice is to be polite and professional. Networking is about building relationships, not just about asking for jobs.

Using Social Media in Your Job Search

Many don’t realize that posting on social media, such as Facebook, can be helpful with your job search.

Here are some key things to remember when using social media to ask about job openings. If you are going to ask about job openings:

  1. Make sure that your posts and profile are professional. Many employers will look at an individual’s social media before hiring them.
  2. If you are currently employed, are co-workers on your friends list? If it’s not common knowledge that you are looking for a new job, you may want to consider posting in a way where those individuals will not see it.
Staying Organized During Your Job Search

When you are looking for a job, it is essential to stay organized. It is vital to keep track of the jobs you have applied for, the interviews you have had, and follow-ups that need to be done. Documentation like this will help ensure you take advantage of all opportunities.

As an Employment Specialist, I recommend creating a job log. If you are interested in a job log template, click HERE. It is a Google Sheet, so you will need a Google account and select File, Make a Copy.

That’s it for the guide to job search best practices. I hope these tips help you in your job search. Remember, finding a job takes time and effort. With these tips, you are on the right track.

Happy job hunting!
