Veterans Day is a time to honor the courage, sacrifice and service of those who have worn a uniform of the U.S. military. It’s also a moment to reflect on the paths that lead individuals to serve as well. Paths that are often shaped by resilience, community and a desire to make a difference. For Abbi, her journey to enlisting in the Air Force began not with certainty, but with struggle.
From Homelessness to Hope
Abbi was facing homelessness and lacked the support she needed to get back on her feet. She wanted a job, stability and a chance to move forward, but she didn’t know where to start. That’s when a friend, also a client of Goodwill Kentucky (Louisville), referred her to the organization. Through Goodwill®, Abbi received assistance with housing and began an internship that helped her develop professionally and learn new skills.
With support and encouragement, Abbi secured a job and bought a car, the first tangible steps toward independence. But more than that, she rediscovered her sense of purpose. “Goodwill made me realize I am needed in more places than one,” she said. “My environment made me who I am, but I am not just for this environment; I want to help people.”
A Future in Service
Abbi’s experience with Goodwill didn’t just help her find stability; it helped her see her potential. She realized she could continue to enjoy her freedom, be herself and serve others in a meaningful way. That clarity led her to enlist in the Air Force, where she now continues her journey of service and growth.
Her story is a powerful reminder that support, community and opportunity can help people change their own lives. It’s also a reminder that those who serve often come from places of deep personal strength. This Veterans Day, we honor Abbi and all those who have found their path to service through resilience and hope.
