June marks Pride Month, a time of joy and affirmation for the LGBTQ+ community. It’s also time to take action and create a world that is more open and accepting of all sexual orientations and gender identities. As we commemorate this Pride Month, we want to share Auggie’s story.
Auggie’s journey with Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona (Tuscon) began with a flyer that caught his eye. He was seeking a workplace that embraced diversity and offered a discrimination-free environment when he discovered the Young Adult Reentry Program.
The program gave Auggie the opportunity to find not just a job but a pathway to a fulfilling career without the fear of being judged for his gender identity. With comprehensive support that included one-on-one case management, career search assistance, interview preparation, résumé updates, work placement and even transportation, Auggie began to thrive.
Finding Stable, Supportive Employment
Thanks to the support, Auggie secured a new position in a retail store. His determination and hard work quickly shone through. His diligence saw him swiftly climbing the career ladder, earning the trust to manage the cash register during the bustling peak hours. But it wasn’t just about the tasks he performed; it was the confidence and self-assurance that grew within him. Auggie was valued by his employer for who he was and the unique contributions he brought to the team.
Of course, the stability of full-time employment brought tangible benefits — a steady income, health benefits and the security of knowing he could provide for his family. But it also brought intangible rewards. The stress of uncertainty faded and was replaced by the excitement for the future, saving for retirement and dreaming bigger.
Reflecting on his journey, Auggie shared, “Goodwill promotes working in an inclusive and diverse environment full of different backgrounds and identities. It has made me realize patience and communication are key to success within this career.”
As we celebrate Pride Month, Auggie’s story reminds us of the barriers LGBTQ+ individuals face in finding safe, fulfilling employment. We’re proud that Auggie paved a new path for himself with support from Goodwill®.
We look forward to seeing the continued success of those in the LGBTQ+ community or anyone struggling to find inclusive, supportive employment. If you or someone you know could use this kind of support, please connect with your local Goodwill career center.
