October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and we are thrilled to share the inspiring story of Babetta, a remarkable individual who has shown incredible resilience and determination in the face of challenges. Babetta’s journey with Goodwill of the Heartland (Cedar Rapids, IA) shows the power of education, support and believing in yourself.
Embracing New Opportunities
Babetta sought to better manage her physical disability challenges by pursuing a career that would allow her to work remotely. She turned to Goodwill® to gain the necessary skills and confidence. Through their programs, she enrolled in the Google UX Web Design class and Digital Marketing courses, utilizing the Opportunity Accelerator® model. These classes were offered in a hybrid format, combining both virtual and in-person learning, which perfectly suited her needs.
Despite starting the classes late and facing numerous family crises during her studies, Babetta’s determination never wavered. She found joy in learning the materials and was committed to completing the courses. Her perseverance paid off, and she successfully finished the classes, gaining valuable knowledge and skills.
Making a Difference
While Babetta has not yet secured employment, she has already begun to apply what she learned in her volunteer work with Springs of Life Church. She assists with blogs and newsletters, using her newfound skills to make a positive impact in her community. This experience has not only allowed her to contribute meaningfully but has also boosted her confidence in her abilities.
Looking Ahead
Babetta’s journey is far from over. She is confident that the skills she has acquired will open doors to future employment opportunities, despite the limitations imposed by her disability. Her story is a powerful reminder that with the right support and determination, anyone can achieve their goals.
In Babetta’s own words, “Have fun with the class. It’s not about memorizing every single term…it’s about learning the skills.”
We celebrate Babetta’s achievements and look forward to seeing her continue to grow and succeed. If you or someone you know could benefit from Goodwill’s programs, speak with your local career center.
