While Black History Month looks back on historical Black figures and their contributions, we think it’s also powerful to look at the accomplishments of people you don’t hear about every day. There are so many people who have improved their lives and the lives of people in their community. Today, we want to look at the inspiring story of Chirco, a dedicated mother of four with unending ambition.
Chiro was a participant in the Growth and Opportunities Program at Goodwill Industries of North Louisiana, Inc. (Shreveport). She joined because she wanted to improve her career prospects and set an example for her children. Chiro started her journey by working toward her HiSet, a high school equivalency diploma. She enrolled in the Good Futures HiSet Program, which Goodwill® offers in partnership with Bossier Parish Community College. After a lot of hard work, she successfully completed the program and passed the HiSet exam.
Pursuing Bigger Goals
With her HiSet diploma in hand, Chiro expanded her goals and decided to pursue a career in healthcare. Her desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of others led her to pursue phlebotomy credentials. With the support of Goodwill, which included funding to cover the costs of the course, a laptop for her studies, uniforms, transportation and the credential exam, Chiro enrolled in the Phlebotomy Program at Lifeshare.
Chiro’s hard work and dedication paid off when she successfully completed the phlebotomy program and passed the national phlebotomy credential exam, marking another significant achievement in her educational journey. This valuable certification opened new doors for her in the healthcare field.
Balancing Her Current Life and Future Dreams
Despite balancing the demands of being a mother and maintaining employment as a shuttle driver in the railroad industry, Chiro remains focused on her career aspirations. She is currently seeking employment within the healthcare sector and is actively applying for positions. Her determination to transition into healthcare while maintaining her current job speaks volumes about her work ethic and commitment to her family’s future.
Chiro’s long-term goal is to become a registered nurse (RN) or a sonographer. With her unyielding drive, commitment to her family and dedication to her personal and professional growth, there is no doubt that she will reach these goals in due time.
Chiro has not only set a powerful example for her children but has also paved the way for a brighter, more fulfilling future for herself in the healthcare field.
