My Goodwill Story – Debra

In honor of National Disability Independence Day, we celebrate individuals like Debra — who are actively building their futures with courage, determination and the right support.

Debra knew she needed help navigating the challenges of her disability while working toward her goals of employment, improved health and greater independence. After learning about the nonprofit services offered by Goodwill® through the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) and receiving a referral from her supported living staff, Debra connected with Goodwill of the Heartland (Iowa City, IA).

A career coach first helped Debra enroll in digital skills training. Next, she took the NRF Customer Service and Sales course and received specialized training in self-advocacy and overcoming test anxiety. With each step, Debra grew more confident in her abilities.

What Does Goodwill Do?

Goodwill didn’t give Debra her success — she earned it. But Goodwill was there to support her journey. Through training, encouragement and personalized guidance, Debra gained the tools she needed to thrive. She earned her Customer Service and Sales credential in October 2024 and continues to work as a customer service representative at Ruffalo Noel Levitz, where she’s already earned a raise and is now exploring new opportunities.

“Goodwill has changed so much in my life. They provided me with support when I needed it. I have learned so much working with Goodwill,” Debra shared.

Her story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, independence is within reach.
