Melvin, a proud veteran, first heard about the services offered by Goodwill North Central Texas (Fort Worth) through a local Salvation Army homeless shelter in Denton, TX. With a past marked by unfortunate choices and being impacted by the justice system, Melvin faced significant challenges in finding employment. However, his life took a positive turn when he discovered the resources offered by Goodwill®.
A Determined Veteran
Determined to leave his past behind, Melvin sought a second chance at employment. The Denton job resource team welcomed him warmly, assuring him that with their help, he was capable of finding not just a job but a career. Transportation and clothing assistance were both crucial for Melvin.
Melvin became a regular at the Job Resource Center, setting appointments almost daily to apply for jobs, attend job fairs, redo his résumé and prepare for interviews. Each week, he gained more confidence in his job search, often expressing how difficult it was to find employment on his own. With Goodwill’s assistance, he finally started getting interviews, and the center became a place where he felt understood and supported.
Landing the Job
The job placement specialist at Goodwill helped Melvin apply for custodial jobs, leveraging his military background and prior work experience. Melvin’s attention to detail and eagerness to work were key factors in his job search. After applying for several positions, Melvin received a call from Texas Woman’s University (TWU) offering him a full-time custodian role. Overjoyed, he immediately accepted the position and thanked the Goodwill team for its support.
For the next 90 days, the job placement specialist checked in with Melvin to ensure he was enjoying his new job at TWU. Melvin reported that he loved working at the university and appreciated his colleagues. His new employment allowed him to leave the Salvation Army shelter and secure housing through the VA. Melvin expressed his gratitude, saying, “This is the job I am definitely going to retire with; it’s perfect.”
Melvin’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of second chances. Through his determination and a little support from Goodwill North Central Texas, Melvin defied the odds and proved that a person’s past does not define their future.
