Opposites Are Trending for Back to School Style

By Felicia Czochanski Bisaro

It’s always a surprise when back-to-school season is around the corner again. The summer months seem to go by the quickest — the days are full of a variety of activities and routines are set to the wayside for a couple of months. As it reaches the point where you finally put an end to the procrastination and finish your summer reading or registering for classes, it’s a good time to also start thinking about your back-to-school wardrobe. With two back-to-school style trends balancing each other out this year, there’s nothing to worry about, especially once you see the outfits people pulled together from thrifted finds at their favorite Goodwill® stores.

There’s sometimes a feeling of extra pressure that comes with choosing your outfits for the return to school. Your appearance can speak to your experiences from over the summer or how you’ve changed from the previous year. Just remember, if you want to make a statement, that’s not just what you’re wearing; your confidence and personality are what pulls the look together. As long as you feel comfortable and dress in a way that is authentic to you, you’ll start feeling the self-confidence you need to have a successful school year ahead.

  1. Clean Style

Minimalism is in and no loud patterns are necessary. One of the most popular looks this year has been the neutral color pallet, balanced with a less-is-more style and a lot of gold jewelry. While these outfits may look ‘simple,’ you can see each of the Goodwill shoppers above made sure they felt comfortable in their ensembles. The shopper on the left paired a trendy square-neck bodysuit with flattering high-waisted straight-leg jeans, completing the look with brown suede espadrilles that tied it all together. The shopper on the right styled a trendy pair of light-wash, baggy, split-hem denim with white sneakers, a body suit and a cardigan for an almost ombre effect. Her pop of color is a gold necklace, adding her own flair to the look.

  1. Emo Style

Emo style is trendy again, with some small edits to what it may have looked like more than a decade ago. Today’s trendy emo style integrates a little bit of extra flair. Whether it’s something akin to dark academia or something a little more dramatic, the all-black look just might have a pop of color amidst all its moody layers. The look on the left shows a grungy emo schoolgirl look, complete with chunky black combat boots. On the right, we see a more dramatic side, with layered silver jewelry, a blazer that almost doubles as a cape, leather pants and an awesome felt-green hat. You can tell these thrifters are completely owning their unique style and personalities with these looks.
