It has been the coldest winter in recent history for many parts of the country that hit record cold temperatures. It’s not hard to start dreaming of warmer weather and more quality time spent on outdoor activities. Cabin fever has certainly been real with a nonstop deep freeze in the Northeast, at least. If you’re hoping the groundhog was wrong and spring is somehow swiftly on the way, there are a few things you can start doing at home to make yourself believe it even more. Early spring cleaning, of course, is always a good idea, no matter what time of year it is. Putting your energy into fun DIY projects that will help you prepare for an even better spring is also a good idea, whenever spring comes!

One of the things that’s hit home the most this winter is hearing how not only the humans are sick of the winter, but the animals are as well. The deep freeze has been particularly hard on those that depend on unfrozen groundwater and underground food — like birds, bunnies, squirrels and more. I’ve put bowls of water and seeds out in my yard, but even that feels like it’s not enough. As I was thinking of a fun (and of course, easy and affordable) DIY to tackle, a bird bath was certainly top of mind. It’s the perfect way for the birds to splash around and cool down in the warmer months, while also being a vessel to get them water all throughout the year. The first step was to check out a local Goodwill store and see what materials I might be able to use to make something like this.

The home goods section of Goodwill is one of the most overlooked areas that can be full of treasure. In browsing the shelves, I came across these gorgeous blue candlesticks that I knew were coming home with me one way or another. Then, when I came across the beautifully ridged bowl on the third shelf, I knew I had everything I needed to bring the bird bath to life.

This DIY is just about as easy to put together as it is to support your local community when shopping or donating at Goodwill. All proceeds from each purchase at Goodwill go directly back into the community through the nonprofit programs that fund jobs and job training resources for those in need. All you have to do is donate or shop at Goodwill to contribute to this effort.

For this DIY bird bath, all you need are materials that could be used as the bird bath bowl and the bird bath base, and some strong superglue. I already had this tube at home, and it sticks even the hardest items together forever.

Finally, you can put your bird bath together in just a few steps. Shop for materials, glue them together and find the perfect place for it outside.

It’s amazing to see how something so beautiful can come together so quickly. If I’d seen this at a friend’s house, I would have thought it was an outdoor décor splurge. This is a quick and easy DIY that can come together in an afternoon, but bring joy to your home all year round.
