My Goodwill Story – Michael, Mark and James

Michael, Mark and JamesIn honor of Older Americans Month, we celebrate the inspiring journey of three remarkable individuals: Michael, Mark, and James. All three men were able to improve their lives with support from the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) offered by Goodwill of Erie, Huron, Ottawa, and Sandusky Counties (PA).

SCSEP is a community service and work-based job training program for older Americans. Authorized by the Older Americans Act, SCSEP provides training for low-income, unemployed seniors. Participants gain work experience in various community service activities at non-profit and public facilities, such as schools, hospitals, day-care centers and senior centers. The program aims to help participants transition to unsubsidized employment opportunities by providing them with valuable skills and experience.

Michael was the first to come to Goodwill® when he learned about SCSEP through Ohio Means Jobs in Erie County. Motivated by the desire to enhance his skills and supplement his income, he enrolled in the program. His enthusiasm and dedication soon became evident, and he shared his positive experience with his friends Mark and James, encouraging them to join as well.

Inspired by Michael’s success, Mark and James decided to enroll in SCSEP too. They were eager to improve their skills and find ways to supplement their income as well. The program provided them with the opportunity to train at the Firelands Habitat ReStore, where they gained valuable hands-on experience.

The Firelands Habitat ReStore became a pivotal part of their journey. Through their training, Michael, Mark and James not only supplemented their income but also acquired new skills that would serve them well in future endeavors. Their hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed.

On December 5, 2023, Goodwill SCSEP was honored at the Firelands Habitat for Humanity’s 33rd Annual Banquet with the Community Service Award. This prestigious recognition was a direct result of the contributions made by Michael, Mark and James at the Firelands Habitat ReStore. Their commitment and achievements were instrumental in earning this award for Goodwill.

Each participant has experienced significant personal growth through the SCSEP Program. For James, the program has been particularly impactful. It has helped him identify the types of jobs he is capable of performing and understand his limitations. This self-awareness has been invaluable in guiding his future career choices.

The success story of Michael, Mark, and James is a shining example of how SCSEP can empower older adults to enhance their skills, supplement their income and make meaningful contributions to their community. Their journey underscores the importance of providing opportunities for older Americans to continue learning, growing and thriving.

We are proud to honor Michael, Mark and James during Older Americans Month and celebrate their achievements and the positive impact they have made through the SCSEP Program. Their story is a reminder that age is no barrier to success and that with the right support and opportunities, anyone can achieve their goals.
