My Goodwill Story: Tyler

Man stands with hands in pockets in front of a CareerConnector sign at a job center.

Tyler was looking for a new job. He didn’t just want any job. He wanted what many of us search for: a job with good pay and healthcare benefits. For Tyler, that search had an extra requirement. He needed a job that could accommodate his hearing impairment. He wasn’t quite sure where to start, but then his mom recommended he check out Goodwill.

Year in Review

Blue circular badge with a white Capitol dome illustration and the words TAKE ACTION.

As the first year of the 118th Congress comes to an end there have been numerous reports highlighting that this Congress has been on a sluggish pace in passing legislation and has been the least productive since the Great Depression. In this polarized environment it can feel at times that our advocacy efforts are not making an impact.

Holiday Shopping Has Never Been Easier: Find Meaningful Gifts for the Whole Family at Goodwill

Colorful running shoe with teal and purple panels, pink laces, displayed on a shelf in a retail store.

As the holidays approach, the present shopping season is in full swing. Department store lines are long enough to wrap around the racks, and prices are higher with inflation despite the sales and deals being advertised. Holiday shopping can be stressful, especially when you’re shopping for multiple people. It can be exhausting to go from store to store looking for the perfect gift. Not to mention expensive! If there was only one store that could have something special for everyone at a fraction of retail prices… that’s where Goodwill fits in.

House Committee Pushes for Bipartisan Update to Workforce Law

The House Education and the Workforce Committee recently took a significant step toward reauthorization of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) with the introduction of the A Stronger Workforce for America Act. The bill is the product of months-long bipartisan negotiations in the committee on an update to the primary federal workforce development law for the first time since 2014.

Winter is upon us, and with that the magical time of holiday festivities. There is so much joy that comes along with the holiday season, gatherings with family and friends, delicious food and fun decorations to keep your spirits up despite the colder days. That is why so many people choose to decorate for the holidays early. In fact, research has even shown that doing so can have a positive impact on your mental health!

Give your Voice During the Season of Giving

On the heels of Giving Tuesday, Goodwill Industries International joins our partners in the Charitable Giving Coalition in calling on Congress to expand charitable giving incentives to all taxpayers. Since 2012, Giving Tuesday has marked the beginning of the year-end season of giving, during which Americans display unmatched generosity through charitable donations.

My Goodwill Story: Darren

Smiling man with a gray beard and glasses wearing a bright lime-green shirt, secured with a seat belt in a car.

This time of year, amidst the hustle and bustle, we’re all thinking about how much we must be thankful for. After all, that’s what Thanksgiving is all about. With that in mind, we want to share the story of someone thankful for the new direction he has been able to take his life.

Congress Punts Funding Deadline Into 2024

In a rare show of bipartisanship for a deeply divided Congress, lawmakers recently passed a second stopgap funding bill to avert the government shutdown that threatened to take effect after the midnight deadline on Friday, November 17. The continuing resolution (CR) temporarily extends funding for federal agencies and programs into 2024 using staggered deadlines.

While considered an “off” year, voters in 37 states went to the polls and exercised their right to vote on state and and local offices, special elections, ballot questions, constitutional amendments and more. Gubernatorial elections were held in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Governor Andy Beshear (D) won another term. Investing in higher education and workforce […]

How to Bring the Whole Family Together this Thanksgiving

Top-down view of a festive table with a roasted turkey, pies, and bowls of sides on a blue tablecloth.

Times have seriously changed since your oldest relative’s first memorable Thanksgiving. Yet, all of the best things this holiday has to offer remain the same: family, food and gratefulness. Some holidays are exciting for each generation for different reasons. With Halloween, for example, kids love trick-or-treating, most teens and young adults love Halloween parties and many adults enjoy setting the scene with fun décor. But with Thanksgiving, the youngest and oldest people at the table are all there for the same reasons. It’s a holiday that truly brings us all together

My Goodwill Story: Troy

Smiling man wearing a navy Dallas Cowboys t-shirt, a light cap, and glasses, standing in front of a cork board.

Troy was looking for something new. He worked as a security guard for the past 15 years but craved a new beginning.  While trying to find new positions, he felt that living in Southern Texas and not speaking Spanish disadvantaged him. He also knew that a new career would mean some additional education that he couldn’t afford.
