LA Goodwill Sets World Record with More Than 13 Tons of Donations

Goodwill officials pose with B. Howard at donation collection event. It’s official! Goodwill Southern California (Los Angeles) and partners NBC4 and Universal Studios Hollywood set a new world record for the most usable goods donations received in a 24-hour period. The donation drive, which was a promoted as a celebration of Earth Day 2012, recently received confirmation that the 27,290 pounds of items it collected set a Guinness World Record.

Donors were asked to bring their e-waste, and new and gently used items to Universal Studios Hollywood and any of the Los Angeles Goodwill’s 70 (now 72) retail stores or 44 attended donation centers on April 21 and 22. The weekend-long event offered giveaways and prizes, including Goodwill and Amazon.com gift certificates and a trip for four to Universal Studios Hollywood.

Goodwill Industries International President and CEO Jim Gibbons joined the celebration in Los Angeles, appearing on the NBC4 AM news, and introducing international recording artist B. Howard at the free outdoor concert that topped off the donation drive event.

In addition to setting the world record, the Los Angeles Goodwill also enjoyed a 25 percent increase in donations year over year. Plans to break the new record are in the works for 2013.

    - I want to share this sweet email I received today from Bob Perkins, Executive Director of Youth in Focus:So a good Thursday moinrng is seeing an email from Network for Good (the thing that finangles donations from our website) that we’ve gotten a $500 gift, looking to see who it’s from, asking myself who’s Laura? , going to your website, seeing your work and clicking through to yesterday’s blog. How grand. Even when I know YIF is doing great stuff, it’s still more than pleasant to hear other people say so and even put some serious dollars behind it.Thanks so much for this gift (we’ll be sending you a more formal letter but I’m emailing in the moment of pleasure), for your encouragement and enthusiasm for what our students are up to. Lots of people should be like you when they grow up.Thanks again for your generosity and for sharing your spirit.Bob Perkins
