There are so many things I love about this time of year-- the food, the family time, and the festive decor. They’re the anchors of the holiday season that make it so memorable. No matter what we celebrate, every culture’s seasonal celebrations always involve that lovely trifecta.

Thankful for Advocates
This Thanksgiving we’re giving thanks for our advocates. Regardless of your connection to Goodwill®, you volunteer your voice to speak up on behalf of those who face challenges to employment. You educate policymakers about the mission of Goodwill and the impact of their decisions.
My Story: Dan Newberry
Dan Newberry, Manager of Goodwill’s E-cycle Operations, joined the Army right after high school, expecting to complete a lifelong military career. That plan ended abruptly in 2012. Honorably discharged due to a medical-related disability, Dan soon found himself adrift. "I went from having a sense of responsibility, pride and direction in life, to nothing. It was incredibly difficult," he recalled.
Types of Questions to Ask the Employer During Your Interviews
I’m often asked my opinion on what sort of questions are good to ask an employer during interviews. And while in future blogs I’ll get into detail about specific questions and the rationale for asking them, today I want to paint with a broader brush. Let’s have a look at varying types of questions and what you’re trying to accomplish by asking them.

Newly Elected Veterans’ Impact on Congress
We have officially hit mid-November – Veterans Day was commemorated this week and as I write, the newly elected lawmakers have come to Washington while votes from the mid-term election are still being counted or re-counted in 11 house and senate races. The freshman class of elected officials is in D.C. to begin congressional orientation, and includes 16 veterans among the 150 veterans who ran. Among the many firsts in the 116th Congress are four women veterans, which may bring the women’s military service caucus to its highest ever at around six women.

Everglades University, Goodwill Manasota Partner on Suits for Vets Donation Drive
At Everglades University, students, staff and faculty choose a nonprofit to support each month. The Suits for Vets charitable effort was a particularly good fit for the campus: Everglades University is a yellow ribbon school, serving many veterans who are on campus getting their education after serving our country. The partnership was cemented after school representatives visited the Veterans Services Program office and heard how Goodwill works to address critical needs of the local veteran population.

Ageism and Your Job Search
If you’ve ever felt your age was a hindrance in getting hired, today’s blog is for you. Ageism, like racism and other forms of discrimination, exist to varying degrees in our imperfect world. Rarely will an employer blatantly tell you you’re too old, but it’s a clear sense you get. Frankly, failing to generate an interview for a job where you’re clearly qualified, could also be due to age discrimination.
Bring On The Blazers
As someone who loves soaking up sunshine and warm weather, you better believe that the first gust of dropping temperatures has got me feeling a certain type of way. When full on fall and winter weather hit - I know the only thing that will help me stay warm while keeping my cool is layering up with all things cozy. Fortunately, the stars aligned this season and layering, especially with fun plaid blazers, provides the opportunity to create some fun, chic looks while staying on trend.
Divided We Stand – But We Don’t Have to Fall
Because I’m a policy wonk and I’m competitive, I entered an election challenge being run by Politico. I looked at polls, did my research, and made my projections on a number of races in the House and Senate.
