The House of Representatives returned to Washington, DC for a moment during their summer recess for a crucial vote on the budget resolution. The budget resolution which already passed the Senate, sets the stage to allow committees to move forward with crafting the reconciliation package which will include investments outlined in President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda.

Goodwill is Never Too Cool for School

Remember the night before the first day of school when you were little? Just thinking about all the new teachers, new friends, new faces, and new routines always had me practically vibrating with excitement at what the next day would hold. The smell of new crayons, the first-day outfit planning– it was all so routine, until last year.

My Story: Gloria Coe

One in every five jobless Americans are people over the age of 55. At a time when employers need to build resilience, older workers can play a critical role. Older workers bring experience, reliability and perspective to every workplace setting.

It’s that time of year again! The season of BBQs and fun in the sun is slowing down, and the slow hum of cicadas going back into their dens marks the countdown to back-to-school. Like the start of a new year, the commencement of a new school year makes for the perfect moment to reflect and do a refresh that will set you up for success.

Confessions of a Luxury-Obsessed Thrift Shopper

With National Thrift Shop Day on the horizon – August 17th – it’s the perfect time to share my love letter to my local Goodwill store, and some serendipitous confessions of a luxury-loving second-hand shopper.

Beyond Back-to-School

There are things you typically think about getting in preparation for your kids going back-to-school– clothes, shoes, and school supplies, for sure. But there are often things that they’ll need above and beyond those everyday basics that Goodwill can help with too. All those things that are parallel to school, like dances, extracurriculars, and sports are all good things to keep in mind.

Halftime in Congress

After a flurry of activity in the Senate, both chambers are now in recess for the time being.  The Senate recently passed a bipartisan infrastructure package, followed by the partisan passage of the budget resolution which only received support from Democrats.  Keep reading to learn the key items of interest to Goodwill and the people we serve.

by Laura Walling, Senior Director of Government Relations, Goodwill Industries International The Senate spent most of the week reviewing the 2,700-page infrastructure proposal and debating amendments. How To Organize Your Classroom – On A Budget

It’s starting. Back to school flyers are popping up in mailboxes and store advertisements are hinting at long lists of items students need for back to school. And as students scramble to finish up their summer reading assignments, teachers are already handing in their final lesson plans for the year and are starting to get their classrooms organized for fall.

DIY Floral Wall Hanging

Craft supplies arranged on a black-and-white checkered cloth: orange roses, faux greenery, glue gun, scissors, tape, and spray paint.

I always love making my own inexpensive versions of popular decor trends, so this summer I decided to tackle the floral wall hangings that I’ve been seeing around! By using supplies I found at Goodwill, I’m able to save money, save stuff from the landfills, and come up with something that’s one-of-a-kind.

Racing to Recess

Racing to Recess
A looming vacation always provides great motivation to get work done. This statement holds true for Congress as well as lawmakers prepare for the August recess. The Senate passed a procedural vote on a bipartisan infrastructure package with 17 Republicans joining 50 Democrats to move the bill forward, although this does not mean they will all support the final bill.

Congressional leaders continue to discuss the components of a forthcoming reconciliation bill that will include components of President Biden’s American Jobs Plan and the American Families Plan that won’t be covered by the bipartisan infrastructure framework.
